Athlete of the Month - Tucker Dickinson

With the spring season slowly winding down here at West, there have been many impeccable athletes in soccer, track, tennis, lacrosse, and baseball. On the track team, one runner is a standout freshman who is leaving the competition in the dust. Freshman Tucker Dickinson is not only a star varsity soccer player, but he has also found himself among the top runners in his class by recently competing at the prestigious New Balance Nationals for the winter season. Earlier today I had the opportunity to hear more about his high school career and how he plans to keep excelling in his sport.

The Origins of Prom

From corsages, to limousines, to over-the-top “promposals”, prom has become a staple event of the high school experience. Over the years, it has grown in popularity and significance, so much so that young people (such as myself) anticipate it from elementary school. I still remember thinking there was nothing more romantic than when my babysitter told me she had received a box of Bojangles biscuits with “PROM?” written in icing. The history of prom, however, is one that grew more from formality than fun.

The Inner Peace Society (IPS)

Makenna Mayo has recently started a club here at West called the Inner Peace Society through a national program called WORK2BWELL - A student-generated program in conjunction with the Providence Hospital system that will be the club's foundation! IPS will be dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for mental and general student health and wellness. The following is an interview with Makenna where she gives us some more insight into the bright future of the club.

Teacher of the Year

The semifinalists of the Morehead-Cain Class of 2028 recognized 445 teachers in the nation as 2024 Impact Educators, with two being from our very own West Carteret!
“Launched last year, the Impact Educators initiative celebrates K-12 educators from around the world who are shaping tomorrow’s leaders. The honorees are recognized by outstanding high school seniors for shaping their lives and leadership learning.” - Carteret County News-Times
Mrs. Butler, a chemistry teacher here at West, and Mrs. Mayo, West’s librarian, were presented with this award. Since it is such a well-deserved honor, I decided to dive deeper into what has shaped their teaching journeys and reveal just how much dedication and hard work they put into their careers every day.
